sounds literary doesn’t it. well the story’s not very, err, lit-er-ary.
last night, natty drew the short straw and was giving the capt his bath (captbath) and she mentioned that the water didnt’ seem to get very hot and the pressure was low. i immediately pictured the hot water heater split down the middle, flooding the blair witch cellar. but as part of my new jefke for a new year bit, i said “well let’s see if it’s better in the morning and if not i’ll call someone and get a new one”
so fast forward to 7 am. i get up, go to the bathroom. do my oral hygine routine. then turn on the faucet. cold water. cold water that stays cold. then i remembered the conversation from last night.
grumbling i went down to the blair witch cellar, and for whatever reason. knocked on the hot water heater. i have no idea if it was empty of full, but then i thought–oh the pilot light!
after tearing away at the hot water heater blanket i put on literally the day we closed the house (save money!), i found the instructions for relighting the pilot light. well first i had to see if it was still on or not. i removed this little cover/metal thing and found this little portal, and there was no flame. so the light has gone out. i followed the overly complex instructions on the side of the water heater and couldn’t get anything to happen. visions of repair men 600 dollar bills danced in my head.
I waited a minute then tried again. oh look the pilot lit up…. and it was totally not where i was looking–so it was probably lit the first time, or possibily the entire time. who knows.
unfortunately 40 gals of water dont’ heat so fast. so i had a nice camping style cold shower.
it’s funny, b/c i had really totally forgot that i was a home owner for a while there. things were just, err working. glad that’s over with.

Sounds like you dodged a bullet there.
Our dryer has been squeaking and squaking for quite a while now. I ordered a new belt back on November b/c Jen and I both figured that was the problem after doing a bit of research on the web. So finally on New Years Day I figured I should finally take a stab at replacing it.
I figured I had a shot because I have already fixed the dryer once before when it would run but didn’t produce any heat (bad blower wheel).
Anyways, I literally had to take apart most of the dryer to get this new belt on. Got it all set and put it back together.
What did I find?
It’s louder now than it was before. It’s so bad now that if I were to run it I wouldn’t be able to hear the TV in the next room.
Doh, looks like a new Dryer may be in our near future!

Don forgot to point out that I was the one who diagnosed the dryer blower fan problem and ordered the part to fix it. I was pretty impressed with myself for figuring out why it spun and had heat but still nothing dried, and there was a clicking sound. But he did all the installation for it. And I hate to waste his hard work. So I’ll just run the dryer during the day when nobody is in the basement and we’ll save the cash til the dryer is truly broken, much to his dismay.

Ooh, you should get the high efficiency appliances. I think they’ll only set you back about $20k (ok, maybe slightly less). Jefke’s ‘rents have ‘em. His mom just loooves it. Actually, she hates it, bc it’s too technical.

High efficiency appliances bug me. I have a HE washer, and for some reason, the HE detergent gives fewer loads per ounce at the same price. That bugs me quite a bit. Doesn’t seem very efficient….

Now our hot water heater is not working and we can’t get the pilot light back on. Nothin’ but cold showers here! I wish we could just call Schneider to come and fix it.
