i was chatting with coworker jimmy the other day and it dawned on me–i haven’t watched tv in about a month and a half. i didn’t plan it, but i just haven’t seen any tv. well that’s not entirely true, i think natty had good eats on one night. and there may have been an episode of intervention in there (how long until every addict knows about this show? what then?)
for the most part however, no TV. sort of unplanned, we’ve radically changes our habits here at the fort. we used to eat dinner, 50’s style, on folding trays, in the living room, watching the TV. since the capt has moved to solids, we’ve been eating, 40’s style, at the kitchen table, with he in his high chair, listening to the radio (usually “news and notes“, which has exposed me to a whole new world of, err i dunno, lets just say it seems like we’re all not just getting along, ok?). then it’s bathtime (for the baby) then post bath chase around to get dressed time, then story time, and then-well it’s almost 10 pm. usually natty has school work to do so she goes up and does that after the capt retires.
It seems that for all the TV i watched as child/young adult/adult with out natty there to actually push me, i don’t turn the tv on, on my own. I just realized that on my road trips, i almost never turn on the tv. not even for spectravision porn. seems to carry true at home as well.
So for a month or so i was battling that shogun book, all 1210 pages of it. i finished that last week, and forwhatever reason, i’ve picked up the corrections again, for something like the 3rd or 4th time. meanwhile the tivo is piling up episodes of the office and the wire and other shit. i almost have no desire to watch any of it. jesus, what’s happening to me.
i used to love the tv. i’d log in incredible hours. and frankly i think it really helped me–this is back before remotes, so you’d have to get up and change teh channel on your own. so i’d just leave it on one channel–mtv or hbo, or whatever. back in the day hbo used to play the same movie 3 times a day. i’d usually catch it 2x’s. soap opera’s. sure not problem, i love’d them. (i was an abc guy–after school i could catch the 2nd half of one life to live, then general hospital–what of it, i had older sisters they got me hooked, I say stamous as “blackie’ mutherfuckers–rick springfield as a doctor! FU. besides voltron didn’t come on until 4.) then the news with my parents at dinner, then jeopardy, entertainment tonight or mash, then the sitcoms….
but no more. nothing, nada, nooit. i don’t miss it, and yet i actually am not super proud of it either. it just sorta happen. soon natty will be done with school, and i’ll have to make some sort of choice, to go back, for (shudder to think) quiting and canceling dtv. hell maybe i’d get back on netflix and jsut watch dvd’s of shows i think i’d like. it’d be nice not to shell out 65 bucks a month for dtv.
hmm KILL YOUR TV everyone.

Now that you’ve been gone, cancel your TIVO subscriptions and stay gone. You’re really not missing anything all that great!
Hell, now you can go to nbc.com and watch the office online! I did that this week when I found that the stupid DVR decided that a rerun of This Old House was higher priority than a new episode of the office!

I’m with you. No Warcraft and hardly any TV for 3 months. Part of it is the lack of a live-in girlfriend. We’d settled into the “our lives are effing boring, so let’s watch TV and eat ourselves fat” routine. We were going through 5 TiVod shows and maybe 4 Netflixes per week. Now? 1 DVD a week if we’re lucky, and we have to try to fit in Veronica Mars and BSG (and we usually don’t). It’s amazing how much reading, dating, and work you can get done when you aren’t mesmerized by Gilmore Girls.

If it weren’t for the Discovery Channel, Travel Channel, Food Network, and History Channel, we wouldn’t have cable. Seriously, all we watch is Simpson’s reruns and those other four channels.
