lawnday 06 part 1 and dadday

September 21st, 2006 · 2 Comments

right so things have been a bit slow around the shop lately, no new clients, DFTU client scaling back hrs. so jefke’s had some downtime. SVP of the company says not to sweat it, happens from time to time, job’s safe, no worries. but if possible take time off now, rather than later in the year, when there are clients and projects and shit–cuz if i’m not making money for the company now, it’s doubly bad to not make money for the company when there is billable work to be done.

so i took this advice to heart…and took tuesday and wednesday off. tuesday we had the sitter lined up, so i thought i’d do my lawn day, as it’s hard to get all the time together to do it otherwise, and wednesday we didn’t have a sitter lined up, so it’d be ‘the capt and jefke show–on the road and looking for a good time, 2006′. no problem.

lawnday started out alright. gotup, prepared myself. got the capt up, handed him off ot the sitter when she arrived. took my old PC to the recycling center (dell 550 RIP, sniff) it was more emotional than i thought. also dumped the old vacuum cleaner, the pos that was. then off to the depot to rent the aerator. interestingly it didn’t take all that long. there was no line, and they had one that they just cleaned off and it fit in the subie and all was good. so i came back to the fort, almost killed myself unloading it. then almost killed myself aerating, not through any crazy freewheeling or anything, just out of punishment of moving the fuckign thing around so much on my postage stamp yard. that fucker is heavy, espeically with the weights in it.

so then i hosed the fucker off–25 buck cleaning charge if not spotless when returned–then went about loading it back in the subie.  so i pulled this half rotted piece of wood out of the blair witch cellar and was going to use it as a ramp, but some totally rotted local guy was walking up the alley way and offered to help, and so it was pretty easy. so off to HD again, and return the fucker. all went well.

i got some lawnsoil and shit to help dress the bare patches, then a hot dug from teh hut dug cart, and then….ran out of energy.

so i got home, unloaded the subie, and bagged the 2nd half of lawn day–the overseeding. now i love putting down my seed as much as the next guy, but if you’re too tired, then it’s not fun and you could hurt yourself. so i’ll try to plant my seed this weekend i guess.

the rest of the day i puttered around the house moving shit around and trying to de clutter this hellhole.

so yesterday was my first big all day alone experience with the capt. all in all i think it went well. we headed up to target and petsmart with all the other mommies and their babies. then for a long walk to the park on which the capt fell asleep. then the rest of the day was spent playing and crawling around. i actually dont’ have any horror stories. oh sure he didn’t really eat much lunch, but not a big deal really. for me, it’s sort of a relief. sure it was hard work to watch him all day, but now it’s done, i’ve done it for the whole day and i feel like i can (and will have to) do it again. i’m sure that by 14 months most fathers would have already had a kid for the whole day–prolly some on the other extreme could/would never. as you know the capt was a bit more ‘demanding’ and a pup so i had a lot of pent up anxiety about having to take care of him solo (read: without the magical boobs that make him sleep/stop crying/happy, my boobs are great, but they just dont’ cut it with him).  but he’s older, i’m older and well, apparently we can do it. so well that’s good news.

man i need to work on some punchlines for these posts.

How much does it cost to rent one of those aerators? I was thinking about just getting some aerator shoes instead and aerating while mowing the lawn.

nah, the shoes are shite, you need a core aerator–it cost me 71 bucks for 4 hrs with the ‘damage coverage’–i think it’s 88 for the whole day. i know scotts lawn service will do it for like 175. so it’s worth the hassel of renting.
