making the world a bitter place

and now the analysis–could i have a plan?

so i had some underminded motives for the big VT trip, you see i’ve had an inchin’ move up there. so the trip was something of a fact finding mission.

  • would i still like it after all these years?
  • would living abroad, in nyc in the heyday of the dot boom/bust with big buildings collapsing change little old jefke? can you really go back?

well overall the magic was still there. to be sure, burlington feels a little small, but not super out in the middle of nowhere-ish. so that’s a plus. what threw me a curve ball was that natty, adn i think i, really liked central VT alot. also, there’s dartmouth right over the border in new hampshire, which has a kick ass hospital that looks, at least at this point, like it’d be a great place for natty to work.

so now i’m in full on ‘do’in it’ mode. i believe i have covered this before. but bascially it’s a state where one has an idea, usually a bit of a fantasy, and starts to build it out in one’s mind. filling in details and such, all fantasy land stuff. so as part of that, we’ve started looking at real estate, schools (like i know anything about those) and other shit. all i all, i have a little bit of a spring in my step about the whole thing.

i think part of my perma-case of the mondays funk i’ve been in is that i’ve felt like know we want to move, but dont’ know where, or when or why or how. i had Vt in the back of the mind for along time, but natty never wanted to discuss it, mainly b/c of the winters. after this last trip, she seems on board.

so naturally it’s come to the time  start knocking down the strawman. i think you all know i have super ninja powers in suckign the life out of an idea.

probably the biggest ‘gotcha’ is my job. while i’m a consultant, and work 94% from home, the one client i have right now the big DFTU client, is in DC, and i’m the only person from my company in the area. what’s particularly interesting is that when i was trying to get hired by this company, they were always holding my location against me. so here i now have a client where my location is an advantage, and i’m thinking of moving away.

now, that’s not the end of the world. projects end, projects start, rarely are they local. so i could probably, swing the move and actually keep my job, but that said, any thing you do make yourself less marketiable, anything that makes a client say “he’ll be flying in from where?” is a bad thing, and potentially could put me on the block.

so what if i were canned? they way i complain about everythign you’d think i’d like that…well i wouldn’t. and after some prelim searches on the almighty monster.com–it appears that VT really really really doesnt’ need a guy with my skillset (shut up, i know i have one….somewhere).  so if that were to happen, we’d be shit out of luck.

so that’s something to ponder.

so it’s a big ole question mark, granted, nothing needs to be decided today, nor even next week. though soon somethig needs to be decided. i’ll need to switch from ‘fix the house up to make it better to live in” to “fix this fucker up to flip it” mode. oh jesus, i cna’t imagine selling a house, and packing, adn moving. ugh.

so there you have it.

Boston. “He’d be flying in from Boston.” Boston is a euphemism for VT/NH/ME–go with that.

Jeff - Seriously man you need to talk to me. I went through this in January of this year. Everything you posted is the same thing I went through (except some fo the job stuff - that was just different).

I just didn’t end up in burlington for a couple of reasons. Central VT is super nice as is the Dartmouth/WRJ/Quechee area (although you might be better off tax wise in NH if you are down there - no sales or income tax just property tax).

    You know my email :)
