so cross another thing off the list

everyonce and a while i like to take a look back at the few things i’ve said with conviction, and then go back on those things. oh the list is long and esteemed…the diet coke, the yoga lessons (including riding the subway with my own mat), cell phones, wearing a scarf, eating sushi, living in maryland, drinking alcohol (yeah, i know, ironic), studying anything but business in college, not tightrolling my pants (ok it was 1988), cutting my grunge hair (1994 or so)–oh it goes on and on.
well i think i’ve really turned a corner with this one.

i bought a product from the apple corporation–worse than that–it has white “earbuds”. yes my friends. i now own an ipod. i’m sure i’ll be listening to podcasts, and hell even making them, don’t you all want to hear me speak these posts in my tinny midwesterner that hasn’t lived in the midwest in 27 years voice? well let’s just hold off on that.

you see, i’ve been himming and (hemming?) and hawing over getting a nano since they came out, and came close to pulling the trigger several times, but then didn’t (much like the elph problem i had a few months back). well, i had a good month last month in terms of OT, and out of the blue, my company was purchased by another company on wednesday–and every further out of the blue the new company threw all of us big chunks of money to, i dunno grease the wheels of the deal or something. it’s possible that in the fine print of all the documents i’m signing, that the money is for my soul, but hell i don’t need it that much anyway (i don’t laugh anymore really (for you simpsons/aristotle fans)).

with my commuting lately i’ve been trying to rock the mp3 player that i suggested natty get me last xmas (my last attempt at anti ipodism) and well the thing sorta sucks. no fault of natty’s i picked it out, but the shuffle logic is all f’d up and while i know it’s mathmatically possible that songs from 3 bands could all play interlaced so that track 1 of album 1 of band one plays, then track 1 of album 1 of band two plays, and then track 1 of album 1 of band three plays , then track 2 of album 1 of band one plays, then track 2 of album 1 of band two plays, and track 2 of album 1 of band three plays etc. seems shuffle is taken literally. anyway.

so i pulled the trigger. amazon actually had the 4 gig’ers for less than list price, which i don’t think ever happens. and somehow, i qualified to start up on their amazon prime trial account again. so boom , done and done, overnight shipping for 3.99? why don’t mind if i do. thanks.

so naturally i was super busy friday when it arrived, but near the end of the day i took some time to install itunes and plug the sucker in. it promptly locked up my system. i dunno if that’s a rite of passage or what, but it made me chuckle, ok made me mad. then rebooting, the pc just didn’t want to get past the “dood you got a dell, and it’s booting up” screen. if i reboot without the ipod hooked up all is well.

so there, it’s only a matter of time before i’m using a hockey puck mouse with one huge button and a computer that looks like a volkswagen bug or that swatch/smart car, i’m sure.

lemme ask you veterans some questions:

so itunes asked me if i want consolidate my music in one spot. since i’m really really looking forward to never using musicmatch or anything that they make, is this a good idea. i tried it. i now have two copies of all my mp3s that seems silly.

what’s with the ACC codec or whatever the fuck they call it. it just makes me be all apple right? does it get me anything ripping shit to that as opposed to mp3? i’m really not concerned with lossless sound quality or saving .2 k on the file size. that said i now have 8 cd’s worth of shit in that format.

um, i guess that’s it. do i have to dance like the people in the commercial? i don’t really want to.

I think the consolidating the library is a good idea. Basically, it just moves everything into a directory structure that iTunes likes. No biggie there.

The ACC format just converts shit to their own format to save space. The only downside to this is that if you ever want to share or play this on a machine you’ll need iTunes or something since it’s an Apple specific format. MP3 is still universal, so you get more freedom.

Don’t bother with lossless. I would suggest using mp3/LAME. LAME is an Mp3 encoder that is thought by many to offer the best sound quality. It is open source (=works), muliti-platform, and fully compatible with iTunes. Go here:
