4 o’clock in the morning…

so, i have a new friend–neighbor don. not to be confused with co-worker don. neighbor don works the night shift and the royal farms around the corner. royal farms is a convenienenience store chain, not unlike 7-11, well except it’s open 24 hrs. so anyway, don lives in an apartment building a few doors up, and gets off of work around 6:30 am, the time i’m usually out with henry for the boy’s morning run and poo.

henry likes don, and usually runs up for a quick pat on the head, and then sometimes he does some barking, i think to show off or something. don then usually relates some stories from his work night to me. the other night there was a lost dog that come by the store. last night he was held up at gun point–an occurance the seems to happen fairly regularly. he was amazingly cool as he told the story. apparently the guy came in, bought some smokes, and when the cash drawer was open, pulled a gun and reached and grabbed 60 bucks or so. apparently one guy last summer took about 500 bucks and 15 cartons of kool’s.

don just told the tale matter of fact-ly. he doesn’t mind the robbers, just as long as they’re calm when the do the deed. he’s nervous that a nervous crackhead will come in and freak out and start shooting. to be honest i’m freaked out just knowing that this shit happens 2-3 blocks from my house.

just another day in da hood

Oh my god! What are you saying? Your 7-11s aren’t open 24 hours!?!?

And what’s this about having $500 in the till? 7-11 FORBIDS the cashier to keep large sums out in the open, exposed like that. That’s just level one security, man. And basic common sense too.

    Barbarism!

24 hour 7-11 service is the mainstay of western civilization. The day the robbers force them to close at nights and shut off their slurpee machines is the day America becomes ‘Gangland, Escape from the USA’ starring Kurt Russell.

Brendan, the whole point of 7 Eleven is that the hours are listed right there in the name (7am-11pm). I can’t remember the last time I was in one of those stores. They don’t really carry anyting that I would eat, except maybe bottled water (ok, I drink that, I don’t eat it).

Maybe the villains have taken over your country, but not mine sister. In the free and peaceful northern country of Canada, 7-11s are open 24-7 365. My parents have one right across the street. It just wouldn’t be Christmas Day without the piercing brainfreeze brought on by an icy Cola slurpee.
