Aliens the director’s cut

December 31st, 2003 · 8 Comments

So natty and i fired up disc 3 of the quadrolphilolology, which has my personal favorite “aliens”. I thought i had seen the directors cut before, but last nite i realized that i hadn’t, in fact it’s prolly been about 4 or 5 years since i watched this fine film. and well, for my money, it just doesnt’ get any better than when cpr. hudson says “drop you linen and stop your grinnin”.

Really, i love this movie, i have seen it like 50 times or something, and i just love it. hats off to paul riser for his protrayal of carter burke, i mean, it’s flawless, how that guy was able to be taken seriously as a nice guy on mad about you after this role, i have no idea. and paxton, jesus, what can one say, it’s almost academy award winning material, i mean, could the script really have all that shit, he took that role and ran with it. i don’t know ifyou’re keepingup on current events, but we just got our asses kicked man.

brilliant.

the transfer to dvd it very very good. the sound is excellent. we didn’t finish watching it, as it was getting late, but i have the safe little feeling that i can watch it anytime i want, over and over, in my little house, with my new fence, over and over, for eternity.

mwyaaahahahahah

Unless I’m already watching the Princess Bride or Office Space! Then you have to wait.

jefke, the last time you saw ‘Aliens’ was sometime around early November, 1997. That makes it about six years and two months ago.

You are absolutely right about the movie. It is the best action film ever. “They’re in the room!”

This year, Sylvia and I treated ourselves to a music machine for our recently completed room. The choice of machines was determined by the Navide?al promotional offer: one free (cheap and crappy but free) dvd player. We now have one in our living room and bedroom, so when we find ourselves in an irresolvable movie choice conflict, there is always a peaceful solution. This might help in moments where Natty tries to impose less savoury cinematic selections.

And finally: the transfer to dvd it very very good? Please jefke, really. Your disclaimer does not and could never excuse such an atrocity as that sentence. Come one now. You can do better than that.

Come on now. Not ‘come one now.’ An embarrasing slip, coming in precisely the moment where I was criticizing bad grammar. That was a type-o, you hear?

wow, usually such slip ups only happen to me, in the heat of battle, the thrill of the impending flame, the witty jab ready to be released, and then i drop the ball with a type o. you’re right, i’ve been very very sloppy of late. i’ll work on it. new years resolution no. 1.

    i will not use proper capitalization, i won’t i tell you i WON’T.

Alien, director’s cut. Good. Blade Runner, director’s cut, good.

But every James Cameron director’s cut I’ve seen has been worse, considerably worse than the theatrical release. Aliens, T2, The Abyss. He’s a heavy-handed hack that needs a good producer to cut out the fat.

Not to take away from the movies otherwise… I like his movies just fine, provided they’ve been through the wash.

i did notice taht the music for aliens sound pretty much exactly like T2, er and wrath of kahn, which was trek 2, i wonder if there’s a law about sequel music somewhere.

Richard is absolutely right. T2 was awful as a director’s cut. It was not only overloaded. It had a completely irregular rhythm, no timing. It was actually boring. The theatrical release is the second greatest action flick of all time.

However, there is one thing the director’s cut of T2 has that I think should have been kept: the scene where Arnie’s head gets opened up in a warehouse and they switch on the “learning chip.” It explains a lot, e.g. why he suddenly starts imitating catch phrases like “No problemo.”

Worse… Aliens director’s cut. There’s a scene the theatrical release dropped, where the platton or whatever is in the drop ship, and the esteemed Bill Paxton gives a running inventory of the warological hardware to Ripley. Poor. I hate to say it, and I don’t think Bill had much to work with… but it’s a useless scene.

Now, otherwise, I must confess that not 24 hours goes by without me saying “Ease down Ripley” to somebody, at least once.
